• KRB FOUNDATION
Kyriaki’s Retinoblastoma Foundation (KRF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting people who are affected by Retinoblastoma (RB). KRF is committed to raising awareness and supporting children and their families affected by RB. This foundation was founded by Kiki Pirgousis, a survivor of RB, who has always been a vocal advocate of medical research and on the importance of educating families about the successes of early detection.

A Message from the Founder:
I was diagnosed with retinoblastoma at the age of 2. Initially, as a safety precaution my parents brought me in for a checkup to Dr. Renee Richards’ office in NYC where she detected that my alleged “lazy eye” was actually the presence of a tumor surrounding my left eye. The fear in my parents and in my family was almost imminent. However, within a few weeks, I underwent surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital under the care of Dr. Ellsworth and Dr. Abramson. Thus far, my surgery has been nothing short of successful.

It was difficult growing up and learning to cope with a prosthetic eye and many times even emotionally draining. However, my parents chose not to treat my condition as a disease but rather as a test of our family’s strength. Through the unconditional love of my family and friends I’ve taken my life experiences and used them to shape me into the fortunate person I am today. I have learned to live each day with love and appreciation. Perhaps if these things didn’t happen then our life wouldn’t be the same in our happiest moments.

As a survivor of retinoblastoma, I’m in a gracious position to share my experiences and to support and comfort those who have been affected as well. Hope is the greatest gift of all and with family, friends and education, patients are not alone in this fight. Together we could help eliminate this disease and save lives each year. The smile of a child treated and cured by early detection is a priceless reward.
